At Blackburn College Sixth Form, our priority is to ensure that we have the support in place for our students to enable them to get the best possible results and opportunities to progress to university.
Our University Plus programme was set up to support students who are extremely keen on progressing to an Oxbridge or Russell Group university and offers the additional support they need to secure their place.
- Career Enhancement Qualifications
For students interested in a career in Medicine or Teaching, The Sixth Form has enhancement courses, worth an additional 16 UCAS points, to help students progress onto these prestigious high demand university degrees.
This enhancement course is for students looking to enter a medical-associated course, including becoming a doctor, dentist, surgeon or pharmacist. The course will involve building up a range of skills such as team work, discussion skills, research and practical workplace experience.
For those looking into a career as a primary or secondary school teacher, the Pre-Teaching enhancement course will give students a practical and theoretical experience of teacher training, giving them a sound knowledge for university study. As well as the additional UCAS points, students will also complete a valuable practical work placement in a school or schools of their choice.
Students who are interested in studying a Career Enhancement Qualification should make The Sixth Form aware when they attend their interviews.
- High Achievers Programme
The Sixth Form has a systematic programme of support for students who show they have the potential to apply to Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group Universities, or into careers including medicine, veterinary science, law etc. This programme, run by a dedicated University Plus course leader, will include the development of thinking and analytical skills, directed reading from tutors and coaching in discussion and interview skills - all attributes that can help you achieve a coveted place at a world class university.
- Extended Project
Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, are keen to see students carry out a research project on a topic that grips their imagination, and this is why the college offer the Extended Project to our high achieving students. The project is preparation for the kind of study that is carried out at university, giving students a great understanding of higher education. Preparation for this begins 3-4 weeks after your AS June exams, and most of the research is carried out during the summer holidays.
The project, worth an additional 16 UCAS points, takes the form of a series of lectures about research methods and skill, and students will be required to produce a 5000 word dissertation and presentation.
- Academic Scholarships
Students who achieve 3 A* and 3 As (or 3 8s and 3 7s) in their GCSEs are automatically accepted onto the Academic Scholarship programme which is worth £1,000. This scholarship is offered so students can concentrate on achieving fantastic results in their Sixth Form studies, and not have to worry about a part time job. The scholarship money can go towards books, travel to university open days, and curriculum trips. There is no application process. When you enrol after GCSE results day, you will be informed that you have been accepted for an academic scholarship.
