Emilie Cave - BSc (Hons) Applied Psychology (Counselling and Health)
- Studied: BSc (Hons) Applied Psychology (Counselling and Health)
I initially studied the Access to Higher Education Diploma at Blackburn College, before progressing onto the BSc (Hons) Applied Psychology (Counselling and Health) at the University Centre at Blackburn College.
I chose to study at Blackburn because it was close to home and as a single parent with young children, travelling further afield would have been really difficult. As the course is awarded by Lancaster University, it meant that I was able to study on my doorstep but graduate with a UK Top 10 University degree.
I particularly enjoyed the research element of my degree and the tutors were really supportive. They are a fantastic team and have a breadth of practical experience regarding research projects and publications. They gave me excellent guidance with my work and helped shape my future plans.
While I was studying, I took on a volunteer role with a community drug and alcohol rehabilitation service. This really helped me to understand how my studies applied to the real world and I would encourage students volunteer in a psychology related sector while they study.
I enjoyed studying here so much I applied for the HE Sabbatical Officer/Students’ Union President role. I wanted to give something back and help to enhance the student experience at the University Centre. I am incredibly grateful that Blackburn College gave me the opportunity to broaden my horizons and achieve a BSc (Hons) Applied Psychology (Counselling and Health).
I am hoping to progress onto a Masters Degree at Lancaster University in Psychology Research Methods with a view to gaining a part time role, perhaps in the education sector while I study. I then hope to study for a PGCE qualification with a view to becoming a lecturer.
I would highly recommend this course to anyone who has an interest in pursuing a career in Psychology. Even if you decide not to go into the field, the content of the course is transferable to lots of fields.
Studying can be challenging but the results are well worth the effort.
