  • Overview

The course is aimed at people who own their own Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera and would like to learn about basic techniques that can be applied to many subjects including landscape, people and still life.  The course would also be suitable for those who are considering buying a SLR camera and would like to learn about some of the advantages to owning and using this type of camera.

Additionally this course would be suitable for employers looking to train staff in the use of DSLR cameras, where such knowledge may be beneficial to their business or organisation. This course should been seen as the first step towards the ‘DSLR – Portraiture or Landscape’ courses also offered at Blackburn College.

Attendees must bring their own equipment to the sessions.

  • What will I study?

Students will learn the basics of camera design, usability and function, and be provided with an introduction to the way digital cameras have evolved into the high-spec models we see today. A series of small projects (both practical and theoretical) will challenge the student to engage with digital technology whilst at the same time allowing them to explore photographic techniques learned during the sessions.  Additionally students will learn about a variety of equipment such as lenses, tripods and other commonly used pieces.

    Course Includes:

Digital Sensors, Camera Functions, Settings and Exposure, File Types including RAW format, DSLR Applications, Techniques and basic Post-production techniques in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Time will be allocated towards the end of the course for the student’s work/portfolio to be reviewed by a specialist photography tutor

Is your camera suitable for this course?

A DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera will generally allow the user to adjust the lens aperture, the shutter speed and the ISO manually, or independently of one another. Also this type of camera will usually have a removable lens, and this lens will commonly allow a wide angle through to telephoto view.  Owners of the DSLR type of camera will get the most out of this course.  If you own a compact or pocket camera type, there could be some elements of this course that you may be unable to access fully.

  • Entry Requirements

The course is open-access, and therefore no prior learning or experience is required.

Attendees must bring their own equipment to the sessions.
