This is a part time course for adults who are employed in either a school or college setting, supporting teaching and learning within the classroom.

  • Overview

    This is a part time course for adults who are employed in either a school or college setting, supporting teaching and learning within the classroom.

    You will complete a series of 11 mandatory units ranging from safeguarding to supporting English and Maths skills.

    The course will enable you to gain HLTA (Health Level Teaching Assistant) status depending upon your role within your school or college.  Alternatively you may wish to progress on to a Foundation Degree at the University Centre at Blackburn College.

    You will need to be employed in a school or college environment for a minimum of 15 hours per week supporting teaching and learning in the classroom.  In addition you will need to be at least 19 years of age and have a good standard of English and Maths.

  • What will I study?

    You will complete 11 mandatory units of new and updated professional standards including:

    • Supporting the use of ICT in the learning environment.
    • Supporting the assessment for learning.
    • Supporting English and Maths skills.
    • Understand how children and young people develop.
    • Understand how to safeguard children and young people.
  • Entry Requirements

    You will need to be employed in a school or college environment for a minimum of 15 hours per week supporting teaching and learning in the classroom.  In addition you will need to be at least 19 years of age and have a good standard of English and Maths.

  • How will I be assessed?

    You will need to attend the full 12 months of the course, during this time you will be expected to attend an induction and 16 x 2 hour workshops.

    You will be assessed by an approved assessor, who will visit you in your workplace to observe and assess your practical work.

    You will submit a portfolio of evidence to show your knowledge and understanding.

    Teaching Assistant

    Teaching assistants support children with their learning activities in the classroom. They work closely with teachers to make sure pupils enjoy learning in a safe and caring setting.

    If you like working with children and want to play a part in their education and wellbeing, this career could be ideal for you. You'll need to the ability to work closely with parents and teachers. You'll also need good literacy and numeracy skills, as well as creative ideas for activities.

    To do this job, you will usually need some experience of working with children. Qualifications in early years work will also be helpful. You may be able to start as a trainee through an Apprenticeship scheme.

    Special Needs Teaching Assistant

    If you are keen to help children and want to work in a school, this could be an ideal job for you. Special needs teaching assistants help children with a wide range of learning, physical or behavioural difficulties.

    Local education authorities (LEAs) and schools decide which qualifications and experience they expect. You are likely to need some experience to find paid work. A good way of getting this experience is by volunteering in your local school.

    To be a special needs teaching assistant you will need to be patient, and firm when necessary. You must also be willing to help with children’s personal needs.
